Clone Window

Get Clone Window
Version 0.2.9

Clones the current tab's address and history into a new window when the New Window command is used (and optionally into a new tab when the New Tab command is used).

Note: If you're looking for on demand tab duplication then the Duplicate Tab add-on might be more suitable.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. How do I configure Clone Window to clone tabs?

Go to Tools->Add-ons->Extensions->Clone Window->Options, then set the New Tab command to Clone Tab.

version 0.2 donīt clone tab (opens a blank one) if "New Tab" is selected from context menu. It works ok if Ctrl-T is pressed or "New Tab" selected from File menu.
Using: Firefox 0.8 / Windows

Love this extension!

Thanks for the bug report, it may be a bit tricky to make that particular menu item clone the tab since its code is deeper in the browser, I'll take a look and see if I can make it work.

Hi Pike,

Great extension, it's a feature I really miss from IE - just wanted to add a vote to have tabs opened by the context menu cloned. Hopefully that'll also allow wheel-clicked links opening in new tabs to be cloned.

#4 Tim

Great Extension, feature I sorely miss from IE.

#5 jake

the new window feature works but I can't get the new tab to clone at all - do I have to do something to make this option work?

#6 alm

tools>options, click on the extensions icon on the left, select clone window from the list and click the 'options' button, and there are your options. to do what you describe, change the 'new tab command should open' dropdown to 'cloned tab'

nice extension. solved my first complaint as i consider migrating. also note that 'cloning' entails - in addition to opening the same url - cloning the history of the original tab/window, which the extension does. good work.

#7 Pike

jake,

Hopefully alm answered your question (thanks alm), if it still doesn't work send me an e-mail with the details of what version of Firefox you're using and what extensions you have installed.

#8 Luke

Nice work. Is there any possibility of making it an additional option instead of changing the behavior of New Window? Cloning is something I want to be able to do to a window, but not as the default.

#9 Pike

Luke,

I'm reluctant to add new UI since a lot of people including me want this to be a simple extension that just clones all new windows (without cluttering the menus with new options). I'll consider it but at the moment I'd rather not do it.

#10 Jaquez

I'll second Luke's sentiment. I love this functionality, but prefer it as an option rather than the default. Perhaps if not in the page context menu (although that seems a logical place to put it), then it could be placed in the tab context menu:

Close Tab
Close Other Tabs
----
New Tab
Clone Tab in New Window <----
----
Bookmark This Group of Tabs
----
Reload Tab
Reload All Tabs

#11 Jaquez

Oh, and I forgot to mention, if you add a simple checkbox to allow optional cloning, the context menus are only altered for those that choose non-default settings (i.e., your installation, and all others by default, appears unchanged).

#12 Pike

Jaquez & Luke,

Have you tried MozFBRH by Paradox (http://mozfbrh.mozdev.org/)? This might be better suited to your needs than Clone Window, since it lets you middle-click on the Go button to open a clone in a new tab, does that do what you want or not?

#13 Jaquez

That is exactly what I wanted and more! It does things that I know I will find useful even though I didn't know I wanted to do them. Thanks for the pointer.

#14 cg

Haven't tried it yet, but this is exactly what I was looking for - now it's bye-bye IE!

#15 Blacksheep

I cannot find instructions -- I guess that ctrl + N opens the new window, but I keep getting my home page. Am I missing something?

#16 Pike

Blacksheep,

Have you checked that the new window type is still set to Clone in the extension's options (Tools->Options->Extensions->Clone Window->Options)?

#17 Biff

Great extension! Love it. Thanks.

I agree with others here--would like to get a cloned tab when "New Tab" is chosen from the context menu as well.

#18 Jason

Your extension was a great idea. I do have a small suggestion though, can you make it such that when you open a link in a new window/tab the history is also copied over. That would make this extension perfect, or even create a new extension.

#19 Pike

Jason,

I'll think about it :-) I'm only really in "maintenance mode" at the moment fixing small bugs rather than adding major features but I'll look into it next time I have a chance.

#20 Gobd

Is this extension compatible with the 0.9 branch? If it isn't yet are you planning to make it compatible? Also what about Show Failed URL? I use both of these extensions and can't live without them so I just figured I'd check up on them. Thanks a lot for even making them in the first place!
