Create Shortcut

Version 0.3.6

Install

Install Create Shortcut 0.3.6

Description

Implements the Netscape Navigator 4 Create Shortcut menu item in Firefox. To create a shortcut to the current page bring up the context menu (usually done by right-clicking) and choose Create Shortcut. Selecting the menu item displays a dialog box that allows the creation of a shortcut to the current page/link on your desktop.

Note: This extension is currently for Microsoft Windows only, see the Deskcut extension for a cross-platform alternative.

  • Added a hidden pref that changes the folder where the shortcut is created, set the pref createshortcut.folder to the path of the folder you wish shortcuts to be created in (remember if you set the pref in about:config you should use single backslash path separators, e.g. c:\windows\favorites, however if you set it in prefs.js or user.js you must use double backslashes, e.g. c:\\windows\\favorites).
  • Added a Brazilian Portuguese (pt-BR) locale, contributed by Fernando Pereira Silveira.
  • Added a German (de-DE) locale, contributed by Patrick Ruh.

0.2.1

  • Fixed a problem with shortcuts being sent to the wrong location if the desktop folder had been moved, this extension suffered from the problem described in Bug 228977.
  • Polish: Prevent the context menu entry from displaying in some situations (such as when text is selected or when the cursor is in an input box).
  • Polish: Append an ellipsis to the Create Shortcut menu entry when the shortcut prompt is enabled.

0.2

  • You can now choose to bypass the shortcut prompt and automatically use the default values instead.
  • You can now edit the prefix and suffix applied to the shortcut's name.

0.1

  • Initial Release.

I have been missing this shortcut tool and wondering if some bright programmer would make one. Thanks. I missed it but not Explorer itself! Thanks again.

w00t! This bad dog rocks. I found your extension after my 1st (http://deskcut.mozdev.org/index.html) was done. I'm nearly done with the Linux support, but have your site (and very swank regexp code) referenced in the code and on the site. Very nice!!

#3 Pike Saturday, 3rd April 2004

Met_Enkeph,

I'll stick a link to your extension on the page once you get the Linux support done (Linux makes my brain hurt, hence the Windows only version :-).

I probably won't develop this any further so I'm glad you're going to do a cross-platform version, this extension was a diversion from some code I was working on to allow Firefox to keep your favourties in sync with your bookmarks (which due to me not having much time lately hasn't really gone anywhere yet).

Ahh! Shortcuts are back !!
You did a really good job!

But you should add some parameters in your extension: I would just suggest three :
- the first one is to choose the path of the file where the shortcut is created ( I have 2 HDD, and I'd like shortcuts to be created on the second desktop ^^')
- the second is to choose the way it creates it : I'd love if I could put rules like 'do not ask the name of the shortcut and directly create it', put some rules on the name of the shortcut or the 2 at the same time ^^'
- the last one is to rename the option in the menu item, because I'm French and I'd like to rename it in French :)

I'm sorry if I made some mistakes ( my English is not the best one ) but I just think your extension ROCKS, I just felt these things where missing to make it perfect ;)

PS: why isn't this extension in the firefox's list? It must !!

Good ideas NeMo, I'll try to add them next time I'm in an extension tweaking mood.

You should submit this to texturizer.net - it's a feature of IE that I'd bet a reasonable number of potential converts would want.

Does this work properly with Firefox .9?

#8 Pike Wednesday, 16th June 2004

Silicon Avatar,

Yes (as well as any extension works on 0.9 anyway).

#9 mee Thursday, 17th June 2004

This extension erroneously assumes that the Desktop is in C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Desktop and further creates that directory if it doesn't exist. It should look up where the Desktop is in the registry. Furthermore, once the fake Desktop directory is created, it cannot be deleted due to some MS thread protecting it. You have to boot to DOS to get rid of it. Would be cool if it weren't for this problem.

#10 Pike Thursday, 17th June 2004

mee,

Did you install direct from here or from update.mozilla.org? The version on this server was updated yesterday to fix a similar problem (the one over at mozilla.org is still the old one).

Thanks.

this is the message i get when i click on any shortcuts i have cannot find c:\windows\destop\shortcut.url or one of its components.make sure the path and file name is correct and all required libraries are avalible. but firefox opens anyway.ver 9

#12 Pike Friday, 18th June 2004

aceman,

I think that is a bug with Firefox, this extension only deals with making shortcuts, opening them is built into Firefox.

#13 Phillip Saturday, 19th June 2004

Hey Pike,

I'm a recent IE convert. This create shortcut looks exactly what i've been searching for. The only problem is i'm not familiar how desktop shortcuts worked in NS. It was easy for me to get my shortcuts to work in NS.

In Firefox my Remote Desktop Connections ".rdp" shortcuts just come up in the browser window as text.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

#14 Phillip Saturday, 19th June 2004

Sorry about that...

I accedentally refreshed the screen a couple of times. Did I mention my mother had weak arms and dropped me quite a bit?

#15 Don Saturday, 19th June 2004

The "Create Shortcut" menu item doesn't seem to appear in Firefox .9 anywhere that I can find. Where should it appear?

#16 Pike Saturday, 19th June 2004

Phillip,

This extension creates .lnk shortcuts the same as IE, they should open the page just by double-clicking them. I'm not sure what you mean about .rdp shortcuts. If Firefox is not opening .lnk shortcuts the only advice I can give it to make sure you did a clean install and try setting Firefox as the default browser again.

Don,

It appears when you right-click on a page or on a link.

#17 NomadOfNorad Sunday, 20th June 2004

I'll bite, how DO you set Firefox as the default browser (and set another one if I change my mind)? I turned off the dialog box that came up each time I launched into Firefox, the one which asks if you want to make this your default browser, because it was getting annoying. Is there a menu command to make Firefox the default browser, or one to bring back that dialog?

(I can't get the shortcut menu either.)

#18 Don Sunday, 20th June 2004

From Pike:
It appears when you right-click on a page or on a link.

Cool, there it is.

I am coming over to Firefox from Internet Explorer and I guess I was expecting it to be under the file menu like it was in it. Like Firefox much better. It blows IE away with its speed.

Thanks for the shortcut extension. I used that alot in IE and didn't want to have to give it up with Firefox.

#19 Pike Sunday, 20th June 2004

NomadOfNorad,

Open Firefox goto Tools->Options->Default Browser->Check Now

And to go back to IE as default, open IE, if it asks to become default browser click yes, if not goto Tools->Internet Options->Programs and check "IE should check to see whether it is the default browser", then restart IE.

#20 NomadOfNorad Tuesday, 22nd June 2004

Okay, so how do you save a link to the CURRENT page to the desktop? I use that function all the time on Internet Exploder. If there doesn't exist an Extension to do that in Firefox, somebody needs to write one! (Hint-hint, nudge-nudge)

And thank you, Pike, for the instructions concerning setting the default browser. I'd actually found out about it on my own, after asking that, by doing some poking around through the menus. It was still helpful you posting the details here, though, because I'd forgotten where I'd found the equivalent function in IE.
