Create Shortcut

Version 0.3.6

Install

Install Create Shortcut 0.3.6

Description

Implements the Netscape Navigator 4 Create Shortcut menu item in Firefox. To create a shortcut to the current page bring up the context menu (usually done by right-clicking) and choose Create Shortcut. Selecting the menu item displays a dialog box that allows the creation of a shortcut to the current page/link on your desktop.

Note: This extension is currently for Microsoft Windows only, see the Deskcut extension for a cross-platform alternative.

  • Added a hidden pref that changes the folder where the shortcut is created, set the pref createshortcut.folder to the path of the folder you wish shortcuts to be created in (remember if you set the pref in about:config you should use single backslash path separators, e.g. c:\windows\favorites, however if you set it in prefs.js or user.js you must use double backslashes, e.g. c:\\windows\\favorites).
  • Added a Brazilian Portuguese (pt-BR) locale, contributed by Fernando Pereira Silveira.
  • Added a German (de-DE) locale, contributed by Patrick Ruh.

0.2.1

  • Fixed a problem with shortcuts being sent to the wrong location if the desktop folder had been moved, this extension suffered from the problem described in Bug 228977.
  • Polish: Prevent the context menu entry from displaying in some situations (such as when text is selected or when the cursor is in an input box).
  • Polish: Append an ellipsis to the Create Shortcut menu entry when the shortcut prompt is enabled.

0.2

  • You can now choose to bypass the shortcut prompt and automatically use the default values instead.
  • You can now edit the prefix and suffix applied to the shortcut's name.

0.1

  • Initial Release.

Nomad,

To create a shortcut to the current page, right click and select Create Shortcut (you can also shortcut a link by putting your mouse over the link and right clicking).

Thank you, that did the trick. :-D

Why do these Extensions not come with docs? It might help if Firefox's Extensions menu had a fourth little colored square that launched into the local copy of the docs for the particular Extension.

Nomad,

I did suggest something like that to the Firefox developers though they didn't add it. Hopefully they'll think about it for a future version

Tried the latest, and the shortcut was placed in the right place--on my Desktop (which is not in the standard Windows place). Awesome! This and the Clone Window are just must-haves for me. Thanks!

You should make an extension that does the oposite, one where you can put desktop icons into a toolbar or bookmark toolbar. This doesn't work for firefox on windows. You can place a link there, but it eitehr says it's broken because you put a shortcut there or it tries to download a program you already have if you use the executable.

Firefox 0.9.1 on Win ME
Does not work.
Error message.
I used this on e0.8 where it worked nicely.
Hope it can be fixed.

#27 Pike Monday, 5th July 2004

katana,

What error message?

#28 jah Sunday, 11th July 2004

For anyone getting the above "cannot find file" error when clicking on a shortcut, change the following registry key from "InternetExplorer" to "Firefox":
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\http\shell\open\ddeexec\Application

works fine now.

Your Create Shortcut extension is great. The only comment I have is that it seems you can only use it on links now.

It would be handy if there was a way to create a shortcut to the current page, or to an existing bookmark.

#30 Pike Sunday, 11th July 2004

Steven,

The only change I made in the new version is not to show the menu item when the cursor is inside a textbox or when text is selected. The menu item should still be there if you right-click on any other part of the page.

I'm new to Firefox (0.9.2), and just downloaded your nifty Shortcut extension from their extension page. However, I had to uninstall it as it caused a complete lockup whenever I right clicked anything on my desktop, whether or not Firefox was open. I'm still using the Win98 OS and maybe it's just getting too entangled, but if you have any ideas I would appreciate hearing them!

Wow how did I let that post slip without a Spell Check??
Let me try this again.

Hello Pike,

I find your Create Shortcut extension indispensable.
Is it possible for you to add an option to point the shortcut to a particular folder and make it automatic like Firefox Downloads has that option?

Something like this.

Create Shortcut to d:\Web Shortcuts or where ever you would like to place them and the Shortcut is placed there with out any prompts.

Thanks.

I enjoy the plug-in.

I'd like to see support for icon files in a futur release if at all possible.

Eiether the default favicon.ico
Or alternativley the value(s) found in <link rel="icon" or <link rel="SHORTCUT ICON"

#34 Pike Saturday, 17th July 2004

Dexter,

This extension has no effect on the loading of shortcuts it just creates them. You might be suffering from a Firefox bug see this page:

http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=93440

GrailKnight,

That would be easy to add, I might add it but only as a hidden pref since I think most people don't need that feature.

Mark,

I have no idea how to add icons to shortcuts, if you or anyone has any documentation on that, please let me know.

#35 Mark Dellacca Saturday, 17th July 2004

When your extension creates a shortcut it creates a file that contains a section header and a URL. I'll use an example created using mozzila.org. The file would look like this:

[InternetShortcut]
URL=http://mozilla.org/

To add a favorite's icon you need to add the following lines:

IconIndex=0
IconFile=http://mozilla.org/favicon.ico

Some sites don't put the icon in the root but instead use the link icon HTML Header tag which looks like this:

<link rel="icon" href="relative_file_path" type="image/x-icon" />

Some sites use an alternative HTLM Header tag which looks like this:

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="relative_file_path" type="image/x-icon" />

This information is specific to Windows. I do not have similar specifications for other OSes or desktop environments.

PS: Could you point me to a site that explains what tools are needed to develop extensions for Firefox? Maybe that even contain a simple sample or two?

#36 Pike Sunday, 18th July 2004

Thanks for the info Mark.

p.s. For extension tutorials see:

http://www.mozilla.org/docs/tutorials/tinderstatus/
http://xulplanet.com/tutorials/xultu/

You can unzip any extension to see the source (and I accept code contributions if you want to try adding icon support to this extension, if not I'll try to add it sometime in the next few weeks).

When I greate a shortcut on my desktop and try to open it the page opens in IE instead of Firefox. Firefox is slected as my default browser.

#39 Pike Monday, 2nd August 2004

@KRK

You mean creating a shortcut of an individual frame?

@Bob

You may be seeing a known bug in Firefox 0.9.x see this page for more information and a possible fix:

Typically I'm an upgrade freak. In this case I've opted to stick with your version 0.2 You see, I like the idea of assigning a cutemenu icon to the create shortcut context menu item. It was rather simple to do within a cutemenu .js file. Worked like a charm. Nothing novel; I just used the "redo" icon. Looks pretty good. HOWEVER, I notice that in your polishing for 0.2.1, I'm not able to assign an icon now to the create shortcut menu item - no matter what I try it just won't work. I even included the ellipsis in the menu item tag but still cutemenu does not see create shortcut in 0.2.1. Call me anal but I like my icon. Incidentally, 0.2 overall works pretty much flawlessly in Firefox 1.0. So I think I'll stick with it for a while longer.
