Create Shortcut

Version 0.3.6

Install

Install Create Shortcut 0.3.6

Description

Implements the Netscape Navigator 4 Create Shortcut menu item in Firefox. To create a shortcut to the current page bring up the context menu (usually done by right-clicking) and choose Create Shortcut. Selecting the menu item displays a dialog box that allows the creation of a shortcut to the current page/link on your desktop.

Note: This extension is currently for Microsoft Windows only, see the Deskcut extension for a cross-platform alternative.

 • Added a hidden pref that changes the folder where the shortcut is created, set the pref createshortcut.folder to the path of the folder you wish shortcuts to be created in (remember if you set the pref in about:config you should use single backslash path separators, e.g. c:\windows\favorites, however if you set it in prefs.js or user.js you must use double backslashes, e.g. c:\\windows\\favorites).
 • Added a Brazilian Portuguese (pt-BR) locale, contributed by Fernando Pereira Silveira.
 • Added a German (de-DE) locale, contributed by Patrick Ruh.

0.2.1

 • Fixed a problem with shortcuts being sent to the wrong location if the desktop folder had been moved, this extension suffered from the problem described in Bug 228977.
 • Polish: Prevent the context menu entry from displaying in some situations (such as when text is selected or when the cursor is in an input box).
 • Polish: Append an ellipsis to the Create Shortcut menu entry when the shortcut prompt is enabled.

0.2

 • You can now choose to bypass the shortcut prompt and automatically use the default values instead.
 • You can now edit the prefix and suffix applied to the shortcut's name.

0.1

 • Initial Release.

@bcool

Have you tried assigning the icons by id? The ids for Create Shortcut's menu items are:

create-shortcut-from-page
create-shortcut-from-link

Okay, two things I'd like to see added to Create Shortcut:

1) Set it so someone can CHOOSE if they want "Shortcut to ..." added to the beginning of the shortcut. I always delete that part from the name, and it's a hassle.

2) Is there a way to link the webpage's icon image to the shortcut, like happens when you do this from Internet Exploder? You know, the favicons thing.... Windows does provide a way for the user to change the icon image for any icon (right-click and select Change Icon), so presumably there's a way to do so from "underneath the hood," transparently for the user...

If #2 can't be done, no biggie, but #1 would be muchly appreciated.

@Nomad

1) Go to Tools->Extensions->Create Shortcut->Options and clear the prefix field.

2) Mark gave me some information on adding icons to shortcuts in comment 35, not sure if/when I'll get around to doing that.

I am using Create Shortcut 0.2.1, FF version 1.0

I can't seem to find a way to get an internet shortcut to work with Firefox when placed on the desktop or taskbar using your extension or by dragging and dropping.

It comes up with a "This file deos not have a program associated with it... Creat association..." message. I tried setting IE as my default browser and then going back to FF, but no dice.

Any ideas why this is not working

@01ps

I'm not sure what the cause is, but it can often be solved using SetBrowser:

Looking forward to favicon support as deskcut doesn't seem to support it. I am assuming when you accomplish this that the desktop shortcuts will have their favicon displayed on the desktop instead of the Firefox icon I have about 30 of!

#47 FF has Only one Severe Problem Sunday, 2nd January 2005

& that is that there is no way to make firefox fore warn you before you enter a secure web site I.E. does this by default now I beleve, Firefox 1.0 & before & there after needs a popup warning that needs for you to click ok before you enter in to a secure web site/page as for no one ought to do this unless they're going to make a purchase on the before mentioned secure site,... REASON: because while under a secure web site "when you see the lock icon" this does in fact leave your Computer & all the data within it OPEN! because it bypasses your Firewall completely!
Does anyone have a FIX for this flaw?
Thanks, ps great plugin I'll install it soon

@Vincent

Don't hold you breath Vincent, despite my comment 36 I still haven't had a chance to work on that feature and I'm not sure when I will.

@FF has Only one Severe Problem

Could you explain why visiting a secure site would "leave your Computer & all the data within it OPEN"?

#49 Ed Thursday, 6th January 2005

Well done, Pike! NIH (not-invented-here) seems to be preventing Firefox from having sortable, mergeable, manageable bookmarks. Your excellent extension is a welcome step in the right direction. My suggestion for improvement has been pre-empted by NeMo, namely to allow me to choose the folder in which to create the URL-file.
Many thanks!

Hi,

I like your extension very much, but I miss an option.
It would be nice if it was possible that this command would be available via the menu (Like File | Schorcut to ) or something similar. This has to be optional, for those who don't want to clutter their menu.

Hi -

The capability of sending a shortcut to the desktop was the first thing I noticed that Firefox lacked. I was glad to see there is an extension such as yours (and another as well), but... where does the menu item show up? What pull down? I expected to see it in the File pulldown but I haven't a clue. There's nothing on your site, or that other site really, to indicate what your supposed to see when you do the install. This is probably an indication of the standard mindset that prevails for creators of Firefox extensions? Don't get me wrong. I'm sure these things are great. I'm just frustrated with not being able to find the menu component to actually make a shortcut - and I don't like spending so much time trying to figure it out.

Thanks for your help ahead of time. I appreciate it.

@Mike LaVelle

Right-click the page (or a specific link) and select "Create Shortcut".

As you noticed I'm clueless at UI design. :-)

@2607

No I don't have a link, I didn't even know there was a French version until I read your comment. :-)

#55 Billy The Fish Thursday, 18th August 2005

Which one should I use? This or Deskcut?

Any advantages of (a windows user) using either???i

#56 Pike Thursday, 18th August 2005

@Billy

As far as basic features are concerned I doubt there's much difference, however DeskCut is still being regularly updated so I expect it has a lot more advanced features than Create Shortcut does (I haven't tried it though so I'm only guessing).

#57 Robert Tuesday, 13th September 2005

This is all good except....AAAARGH...my shortcuts/deskcuts do NOT open up in Firefox.

And also not in the previous version of Mozilla browser.

I currently have Firefox V 1.0.6 and use Win2000.

Whenever I click on a shortcut I do not get the webpage but a text page showing the following...using Yahoo as an example.

" [DEFAULT]
BASEURL=http://www.yahoo.com/
[InternetShortcut]
URL=http://www.yahoo.com/ "

The only way to get the web page to load is to drag and drop the shortcut into the text page.

I have looked high and low for a solution on the web, but came up with only 2 other persons having this particular problem...and no solution found.

Firefox is my default browser.

Any ideas why it does this?

#58 Pike Wednesday, 14th September 2005

@Robert

Sorry, I really have no idea what the problem is. My only suggestion is to change default browser to IE (or something else) then change back to Firefox but I suspect you've already tried that.

#59 Dominique P. Friday, 2nd December 2005

Thanks for this very helpful extension.

Is it possible to customize Create Shortcut in order to choose the icon associated with shortcuts created by Create Shortcut ?
(I apologize for my bad english and hope you can however understand the question)

#60 Pike Friday, 2nd December 2005

@Dominique

No I'm afraid that's not possible currently.
