To create a shortcut to the current page bring up the context menu (usually done by right-clicking) and choose Create Shortcut. Selecting the menu item displays a dialog box that allows the creation of a shortcut to the current page/link on your desktop.
Note: This extension is currently for Microsoft Windows only, see the Deskcut extension for a cross-platform alternative.

prefs.jsoruser.jsyou must use double backslashes, e.g. c:\\windows\\favorites). - Added a Brazilian Portuguese (pt-BR) locale, contributed by Fernando Pereira Silveira.
- Added a German (de-DE) locale, contributed by Patrick Ruh.

@folksnake
Unfortunately I don't know what the problem might be. I'd suggest that the first thing you should try is shutting down Firefox then going into your profile folder and deleting (or renaming) the following files:
extensions.cache
extensions.ini
extensions.rdf
You can find your profile folder by following these instructions:
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Profiles#How_to_find_your_profile
Please let me know if this helps.
Thanks, Pike
I tried your suggestion, deleted the files, etc, and came up with the same result: installation error.
I have no idea what to try next, so I'll try to live without a shortcut thingy for now. Thanks for your help!
Thank you for upgrading this extension for FF3.
This is a "must have".
E obrigado ao Fernando Silveira pela versão em português.
Hi,
I too would like to thank you for upgrading create shortcut for FF 3. I couldn't live without it.
Any way that future updates could include a way to specify a save location for the shortcuts?? I've been crossing my fingers forever hoping you'd add this, so I thought I should come right out and ask...please, please!! ;)
Thanks.
@Ladybug
If you go into about:config you can set "createshortcut.folder" to a folder where you want the shortcuts saved (reset it to go back to saving on the desktop). I'm not sure if that helps or if you need to choose a different folder for each shortcut.
I upgraded to FF3 yesterday. I rely heavily on this extension and it was one of the first I added to FF3. Unfortunately, it just doesn't work. It installed OK, and it appears to work - I get the dialog box etc. But no shortcut is created.
I note that createshortcut.folder in about:config has no value
Further to above - setting a value in createshortcut.folder doesn't help. And the Deskcut extension doesn't work, either.
@Paul
Could you try the following steps please:
1. Go to about:config (type it into the location bar and press Enter then click through the warning).
2. Find javascript.options.showInConsole and set it to true.
3. Close all Firefox windows and then restart it.
4. Open Tools->Error Console and click the Clear button.
5. Try to create a shortcut.
6. Copy and paste all errors that appear in the console here.
Thanks.
Thanks for your prompt reply, but it seems to have been a deeper issue. I just rebooted for the first time since updating to FF3, and all the refinements I made yesterday - addons, theme, custom buttons etc - were gone. Except for Create Shortcut and one other extension. And Create Shortcut was working! Go figure. I'm now reinstalling FF3 from the ground up. So far so good, including CS.
Hi,
I'm a BabelZilla member but a beginnerto translate extensions. In addition it's been a long time since I've not translated a Firefox extension to french. I know how to extract the XPI or JAR files content but could you please help me to identify the files to translate, I don't remember where to find it. Then I would send you the translation (once achieved) for you to include it to your future versions. Thanks in advance.
FenyX,
You need to translate all files that end in .dtd or .properties, after unzipping the XPI they are in:
chrome/locale/en-US/
When you send me the files please include your name and website/blog address (if you have one) so I can include them on this page.
Thanks.
I finally made the jump to 3.0 and your Create Shortcut
did not jump with me. Thank GOD you made this and keep up
with updating it. Thank you so much!
Hey, this looks like a really cool add-on. I am currently running Firefox 3.5b4. It said in the box at the top that you added support so I installed the add-on. I restarted FF and I right clicked a tab an the context menu came up but unfortunately it was unchanged, no "Create Shortcut" option. I was wondering if it is possible that the add-on does not have full support for this version of FF even though it is posted that it does. If you can update the add-on or tell what I am doing wrong I would greatly appreciate it!
@Quesomanrulz
I just tried it again on Beta 4 and it worked fine for me.
When you say "right clicked a tab" do you mean the tab at the top because you have to right-click on the page itself. The menu entry should appear underneath "Bookmark This Page".
Hello ! I want to translate your extension in my french language. How can i do it? Thanks for your extension. It's awesome and works for FF 3.5
@DragonZilla
1. Right-click Save Link As on the install link at the top of this page.
2. You'll end up with a file called createshortcut.xpi, it's just a zip file so use any file to unzip it.
3. Look in the chrome/locale folder to find the localizations, copy one to a fr-FR folder then translate the strings.
4. You'll also need to add a line to the chrome.manifest file for your localization, you should be able to figure out the format by looking at the other lines.
5. Send me the translation along with your name and (if you have one) blog/website address and I'll add it to the extension.
Hope it will work for me and others french people
@DragonZilla
Thanks, I've added your translation to version 0.3.5, please reinstall Create Shortcut to get the update.
I forgot to mention in my previous post that the files had to be saved as "UTF-8 without BOM" so I've fixed that. I also noticed that for the prefixes you translated "Shortcut to" as "Raccourci vers le Bureau", I changed this to just "Raccourci vers" since the line is used to say things like "Shortcut to Google" or "Shortcut to BBC News". I'm not sure if that's correct, please let me know if I need to change it back.
If you could check that the updated version of Create Shortcut works fine in French I would be grateful (also don't forget to look at the window in Tools->Add-ons->Extensions->Create Shortcut->Options).
Thanks again and if you have a website you want me to link to please let me know.
It works but i made some mistakes. Sorry
i didn't saved in UTF-8 sorry for that
Here is the fixed version.

Hi
Just upgraded to FF 3.0 yesterday, and have tried to install Create Shortcut half a dozen times since, and no luck. Keep getting "Cannot Install, Unexpected Installation Error". I looked in the FF error console and it says it's a problem with "var itemLocation = e.location.getItemLocation(e.id).QueryInterface(Ci.nsILocalFile);"
Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?
