Popup Allow

Version 0.2.6

Install

Install Popup Allow 0.2.6

Description

Temporarily allows popup windows to be opened while the Caps Lock key or the Insert key is held down.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. Why don't you use Ctrl, Shift, or Alt as the allow key?

Firefox already makes use of all three modifier keys (Ctrl opens a link in a new tab, Shift opens a link in a new window, Alt downloads a link).

2. How do I change the popup allow key?

Go to Tools->Add-ons->Extensions->Popup Allow->Options, there you can add a custom allow key.

Known Issues

  • Clicking the blocked popup icon sometimes opens the wrong window, if anyone reproduces this problem please send me the full URL of the page it occured on.

oh, and by the way, I don't use any other popup-blocker

#42 Pike Monday, 12th July 2004

OK, I'll try to look into it, the problem is if I can't reproduce it on my machine it may be very hard to do anything about it.

Pike, got a weird problem here.

Noah,

Wrong page that problem is with Popup Count :-)

#45 Noah Monday, 19th July 2004

Ah, I knew it had to be one of the two! :D

Wait, are you sure?

The icons, when right-clicked, or even left clicked are the main buttons for allowing a popup through. Which would suggest Popup Allow. I thought Popup Count just counted Popup Allow's work?

You should really consider merging the two, then just giving an option to disable one of two functionalties that the people may not want to see.

#46 vic Tuesday, 20th July 2004

can you make a button toggle in the toolbar that can turn popups on and off?

#47 Matt Wednesday, 21st July 2004

How about making it so that if you double click on the icon it opens the popup AND allows all popups for that site or temporarily disables the popup blocker.

#48 Google Thursday, 22nd July 2004

Why not use Ctrl to disable popups since that is what Google popup blocker uses? I think that Google has the most users of popup blocking software with their toolbar.

Thanks

#49 Pike Friday, 23rd July 2004

Google,

Firefox already uses the Ctrl key for opening links in a new tab.

#50 Noah Saturday, 24th July 2004

Uh, Pike, why didn't you comment on mine, vic's and Matt's suggestions?

I really would like to hear if you've already considered them, found pros/cons in them, or that you like it and it's simply going to take some work for it to happen.

Thanks.

#51 Pike Monday, 26th July 2004

@Noah

I'm not intending to add any of those three suggestions in the near future.

Great extension !!! For Mozilla Suite PLEASE ! PLEASE ! PLEASE!

:)

#53 Jon Tuesday, 9th November 2004

Have you ever thought of making a popup extension similar to Popup Popper (www.bayden.com)? It's the one thing I really miss about IE.

#54 Pike Tuesday, 9th November 2004

@Jon

What's the difference between Popup Popper and Firefox's built in popup blocker?

#55 Ollie Thursday, 11th November 2004

Glad to see Popup Allow still fully compatible with the final release of Firefox 1.0! However now that 1.0's out, can you clear up the following:

a) The sole functionality added by Popup Allow to 1.0 is holding down the Caps Lock key will allow popups? It doesn't add or modify the context menu's in 1.0 as the built-in blocker now takes care of the right-click allow/open function?

b) It's only the Caps Lock key (not Insert?) that is the bypass key?

c) We're on version 0.2.1 or 0.2.2? Because when you download 0.2.1 it shows up in Extension manager as 0.2.2?

Anyways, brilliant work and THANKS for the time you've put into making these great extensions, we all appreciate it!!!

#56 Pike Thursday, 11th November 2004

@Ollie

a) Correct, it only adds the popup opening functionality if it detects you're running an older version of Firefox. On 1.0PR and above the only change it makes is allowing you to hold a key down to bypass the popup blocker.

b) Caps-Lock and Insert both work, you can also define a custom key in Tools->Extensions->Popup Allow->Options.

c) We're on 0.2.2, I released it while the site was down and forgot to update when the site was restored.

I've updated the page to remove mention of a) and update c). Thanks.

I love the fact that we can block popups. I hate the damn things.

But unfortunately there are several websites I visit that use popups as a way of notifying me of messages waiting for me. This extension is ALMOST useful for them - I don't know when the messages - and therefore the popups - are going to be coming in.

What would be REALLY useful, if I could be so bold, is an extension that remembers which sites are allowed to show me popups. Any chance of seeing something like that?

#58 Pike Monday, 3rd January 2005

@oatmeal

Why not just add those sites to the popup whitelist in "Tools->Options->Web Features->Popups->Allowed Sites"?

#59 Mel Sunday, 23rd January 2005

I simply can't get it to work. I've pressed on the caps lock key, the self-selected A key, and both, but none of them allowed the popup to appear. Am I doing something wrong?

#60 Pike Sunday, 23rd January 2005

@Mel

Does the popup open if you add the site to the popup whitelist? If it doesn't then it may simply be that the popup is using IE-specific code and thus won't work at all in Firefox. Or does it fail everywhere?
